A letter of recommendation for a Ph.D program to which I had applied.
October 28, 2013
I am pleased to write a letter of recommendation for Martin Jacobs, an exceptional graduate student in the business intelligence concentration in our MSIT program. I have known Martin for approximately two years. I came to know him well, over time, while he was a student in my decision support systems course, my knowledge management course, and my data mining and data warehousing course, respectively.
To maintain a concentration within the Master of Science in Information Technology, students fulfill their course requirements by taking a rigorous course load. Students are required to complete a combination of specific classes with a heavy emphasis on analytical and critical thinking, advanced independent research and, attending five graduate seminars per term. Students must maintain a GPA of 3.0 or better in all courses in order to remain in a concentration program. Martin has fulfilled this requirement admirably, maintaining a GPA of 4.0 throughout his business intelligence concentration. Martin is solidly poised to enter the nation's best school's and would be an excellent fit for Union Institute and University, in such varied doctoral fields as humanities, social justice, philosophy, and culture.
Martin is scholarly and culturally entrenched; he is ambitious but not pretentious. He self-critiques yet he is confident; he is forthright but unassuming. Martin is delightfully irreverent yet appropriately respectful-he is a complex and whole human being. In the classroom environment, Martin would ask well-developed questions about a project and I would give him broad outlines for each segment. Martin consistently submitted assignments having solidly researched the history of the problem, analyzed complex algorithms and variables, cross-tabulated technical/demographic analyses, assessments, and provided recommendations on ways to make the courses better. His citations and references made it seamless to retrieve the necessary quantitative and qualitative information to evaluate the substance of his assignments. I have used many of Martin's assignments as examples for students in subsequent terms.
Martin is forward-thinking and very open minded and yet, self-effacing at times. I believe he will be successful wherever he decides to pursue his Ph.D. He is, and will be, a dedicated student and a competent professional.
I recommend Martin very highly and without reservation. Should more information be required, please feel free to contact me at ddepreist@kaplan.edu, or at 816-943-1571 by appointment.
Sincerely,
Desiree L. DePriest, Ph.D
